Finding the Best Places to Retire Since 2006!
Saugerties, New York
In the Scenic Hudson Valley, Saugerties Boasts a Cute Downtown, Wooded Neighborhoods and a Love of Garlic
Saugerties the township is tucked in the lush Hudson Valley, about 100 miles north of New York City. Within the township is the Village of Saugerties, part of which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (and was the first business district in the country to receive this honor). The village started out in the early-1800s and was an ironworks mill town for much of its history.
Today, Saugerties still has a slight mid-century industrial feel but boasts a cute, well-maintained downtown with vintage storefronts, art galleries, neon signs, shops, independent bookstores, a movie theater and locally-owned eateries. Penny socials, potlucks and bowling nights are popular, as is the annual Hudson Valley Garlic Festival in which 50,000 people come to celebrate garlic in all its glory. The large Olympic-caliber horse show facility called Horseshows in the Sun (HITS) hosts year-round equestrian events, and Art Lab is a non-profit that brings art education to locals. Nearly every home is on a wooded lot, and architectural styles include bungalow, ranch rambler, arts and crafts, Colonial revival and others.
Part of Saugerties sits within gorgeous Catskill Park, 700,000 acres of forests, lakes and streams. Needless to day, outdoor recreation is abundant.
