Locals enjoy four miles of pristine, white sand beaches with no changing rooms, lifeguards, food stands or crowds (and dogs are not allowed on the sand during sea turtle nesting periods). Palmetto Boulevard, the main drag through town, has several beach access points. Homes line the sand, and a bike path leads riders past boutique shops and restaurants. The Edisto Art Guild sponsors a concert series, an art walk and community theater productions. The Edisto Beach marina hosts live music, fishing tournaments, ecotours and fishing charters. Bay Creek Park has an interpretive center, a fishing and crabbing dock, as well as a weekly arts and crafts market. The historic Plantation Golf Course at Edisto covers a large chunk of town.

To the north, Edisto State Park is an easy getaway. Its Environmental Learning Center has interactive exhibits, turtle talks and turle walks. Visitors enjoy fishing for flounder or spot tail in the salt marshes or along the shore. The park is an excellent place to launch a kayak adventure into Big Bay Creek.

South Carolina:

South Carolina is nicknamed the Palmetto State and its motto is "Dum spiro spero," which is Latin for "While I Breath, I Hope." It is 40th in size in the United States and was the eighth state to be admitted to the Union on May 23, 1788. The largest city and state capital is Columbia.

Formerly known as the Province of South Carolina, the area was also one of the 13 Colonies that declared its independence during the American Revolution. The state was the first to secede from the Union and was the first and founding state of the Confederate States of America.

South Carolina is in what is considered the Deep South and is bordered by the states of Georgia on the south and North Carolina on the north.

The state does not host any major professional sport franchises. However, the Carolina Panthers and the Carolina Hurricanes actually represent both North Carolina and South Carolina.
