Montgomery, Texas
Next to the shores of 21,000-acre Lake Conroe about an hour north of Houston in South Texas, friendly Montgomery (population 2,200) bills itself as the "Birthplace of the Texas Lone Star Flag" and is one of Texas' oldest cities. Leafy and a little hilly, it has nearly doubled in size over the last decade as Houstonians have wanted to spread out.
Lake Conroe is what attracts a lot of people and is the perfect spot for boating, wake boarding, fishing and more. Trucks pulling motorboats and Jet Skis are a common site. Wildlife (armadillos, deer, etc.) is abundant. Many homes sit on acreage.
The pleasant, non-touristy downtown is peppered with historic structures, as well as coffee shops, ice cream parlors, a winery, a hardware store, antiques stores, sewing places and more. For items and services not in town, The Woodlands is about 20 minutes away and full of shopping venues, eateries, etc.
