Santee, South Carolina:
Santee (population 800) is along the shores of 110,000-acre Lake Marion, also called South Carolina's Inland Sea, about an hour northwest of Charleston and about an hour southeast of Columbia. The lake is connected to Lake Moultrie, allowing boaters to travel uninterrupted from Santee to Charleston.
The town is a resort destination as vacationers come to fish and play golf (three courses, including Santee Cooper Country Club, have a Santee address). Santee State Park is west of the lake and offers more opportunities for outdoor recreation, including camping, hiking and canoeing.
Downtown caters to tourists and has some cute shops and locally owned eateries serving Thai, Mexican, seafood and all day breakfast menus. A few national chains are here, too.
Homes are mostly ranch ramblers on wooded lots.
