Lincoln City, Oregon:

About two hours southwest of Portland on the rugged northern Oregon coast, Lincoln City (population 9,200) is surrounded by stunning scenery, with Devils Lake to the east, the Salmon River to the north, Siletz Bay to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

The town sits on either side of Highway 101 and is a favorite with tourists who come for the seven miles of unspoiled beaches, the Lincoln City Outlet Mall and the Chinook Winds Casino and Golf Resort. The beach is a treasure trove of driftwood, agates, shells and floats. Wave watching, beachcombing, tide pooling, whale watching, surfing, fishing and storm watching are all everyday activities. Lincoln City has also been named "Kite Capital of the World," with beach kite flying particularly popular.

Art galleries, bookstores, antiques shops and boutiques dot the area. The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts sponsors art shows and theatrical performances. Cascade Head Scenic Research Area is the spot for challenging backpacking and hiking trails, while the nearby Salmon River and Siletz River offer fishing adventures.
