North Topsail Beach, North Carolina
North Topsail Beach is a town on a 26-mile-long barrier island called Topsail Island off the southern North Carolina coast. The name comes from early merchant vessels hoping to avoid pirate ships by spotting the tops of their sails peeking above the island dunes. Today, Topsail Island is known for its long, pristine white sand beaches, maritime forests and sea turtles.
One of three towns on the island (the other two are Topsail Beach and Surf City), North Topsail Beach, so named because it sits at the northern end of the island, has about 750 year-round residents and 12 miles of its own beautiful beaches.
A few retailers, including a couple of markets, a surf shop and some clothing stores, sit along Anderson Boulevard, which runs the length of the island. The mainland is accessbible via two bridges, and in the summer, enough tourists come to visit that the island population swells to 8,000 people. Even so, the beaches are rarely crowded.
