Atlantic Beach, North Carolina:

On North Carolina's southern Outer Banks, Atlantic Beach (population 2,000) sits on a beautiful barrier island called Bogue Banks and boasts the island's largest concentration of shops, services and restaurants.

The long bridge that stretches across Bogue Sound and connects the town to the mainland was built in 1928 and opened up Atlantic Beach to tourists. Vacationers still come today, drawn by the area's rich history and by the long, sparkling white oceanfront beach on the Atlantic Ocean side of town.

On the Bogue Sound side of town, the Hoop Creek Nature Trail is the haunt of bird watchers and kayakers. The nearby Fort Macon State Park is built around a restored Civil War citadel, and its shoreline is open for swimming, fishing and beachcombing.
