Madison, Mississippi

Peaceful and affluent, Madison (population 30,000) is named after James Madison, the fourth president of the U.S., and sits along 33,000-acre Ross R. Barnett Reservoir in central Mississippi. It started out in the 1850s and is just 10 minutes from Jackson, the state capital, and three hours from New Orleans.

Sixty-five percent of locals hold at least a four year college degree, and nearly 95% of residents own their home. The town has had the same mayor since 1981 and often lands on "best places to live" lists.

Excellent schools and very little crime bring people here, but the primary draw is "The Rez." It has boasts 105 miles of shoreline and is bounded on the north by the Natchez Trace, a 444-mile scenic drive through three states. Rez boating, sailing, camping, fishing and bird watching are all popular throughout the year.
