Lucedale, Mississippi

About 45 minutes north of the Mississippi coast and an hour from Mobile Bay in Alabama, sleepy Lucedale (population 3,200) is the George County seat. The downtown is home to Courthouse Square, where the weekly farmers' market takes place, as well as to the City Hall and a variety of retailers, including a bakery, a coffee house, an ice cream shop and more.

Along the main road through town are motels, family-style restaurants, gas stations and the like. Second Saturday celebrations always have a theme and bring out locals for food trucks, music and vendors selling wares.

Neighborhoods are rural with most homes boasting vast lawns on large lots carved out from the surrounding woods. Those on the far west side of town are tucked along the Pascagoula River, which flows to the Gulf of Mexico. The nearby 35,000-acre Pascagoula River State Wildlife Management Area is the spot for fishing, camping and hiking.
