Hird Island, Darien, Georgia:

Darien (population 2,000) is a nice little spot where the Altamaha River meets the Atlantic Ocean on Georgia's mid-coast. Dating from 1736, it is Georgia's second oldest town but was plundered during the Civil War. The town rebuilt and became a lumber hub and a fishing village known for its shrimp and oysters. Today, Darien focuses on its rich history and has a pretty waterfront.

The town is also home to Hird Island, a private barrier island about a mile off the mainland and home to roughly 40 homes and a grass airstrip. The island is only accessible by boat or airplane. This is a remote area, and many properties are second homes. Brunswick is about 20 miles to the south and Savannah is 60 miles to the north.
