Steinhatchee, Florida:
On Florida's marshy Big Bend Coast where the mouth of the Steinhatchee River feeds into the Gulf of Mexico and borders Deadman Bay (so named after several men were found dead in the river in the 1500s), the relaxed "Old Florida" fishing village of Steinhatchee (population 650) makes its home. This is a rural place, known for its scallops, and it has just two country roads in and out.
Locals are quick to point out that the town is called "Steen-hatchee" and that the name is from the Native American words for "river of man." Tourists come to fish for trout and redfish and often stay at the quaint Steinhatchee Landing Resort. The annual Steinhatchee Fiddler Crab Festival is always a popular event.
The river is dotted with seafood eateries, a food market, a motel here and there, a couple of marinas and a lot of boat docks as many homes sit next to the water or just back from it.
