Micanopy, Florida:
About 15 miles south of Gainesville in rural, north central Florida, Micanopy (population 675) is a charming, old fashioned little town on the edges of Orange Lake. It dates from 1821 and is named for a Seminole Indian chief.
With canopy dirt lanes, tall oak trees dripping with moss and slightly dilapidated historic buidlings, Micanopy evokes an earlier time. Even its cemetary is picturesque.
Cholokka Boulevard, the main street, is lined with colorful antique stores and cozy eateries, some of which have a national reputation (Southern Living has called Pearl's Country Store and Barbecue one of the country's best BBQ joints). Mosswood Farm Store and Bake House is also worth a visit.
Many homes are ranch ramblers and sit on leafy acreage.
