Hollywood, Florida:

South Florida is known for a lot of things, including beaches, nightlife, a tropical climate, snowbirds and cultural diversity, as well as typical urban problems (crime, drugs, etc.). Hollywood sits in the middle of all this, sandwiched between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Once a sleepy beach town, it grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s, and today it has a rich mix of cultures, languages, ethnicities and ages.

Streets are lined with palm trees, and certain areas, particularly ones closer to the beachfront, exude Old Florida's pastel quaintness. Other sections are commercialized without much charm or cheer, although many areas are experiencing some gentrification.

The long, wide beach is often crowded on weekends, but it is gorgeous and the focal point for many people. A two-mile-long, brick-lined boardwalk sits between it and the many waterfront merchants, and people-watching here never gets boring (rollerbladers, runners, bicyclists, many in various states of undress, are all here).

Money Magazine has said that Hollywood today is what the U.S. will look like in five or 10 years, so a walk along the beach is really a peek into the future.
