Fort Lauderdale, Florida:

On the southeastern Florida coast, pretty Fort Lauderdale (population 188,000) is known as "Venice of America" and has nearly 170 miles of canals and other waterways, 100 marinas and 50,000 or more registerd boats. The city is a popular cruise destination and still draws thousands of Spring Breakers every March and April (although not nearly in the numbers of decades past). "Snowbirds" come in droves during the winter and spring.

The downtown underwent a renovation about 20 years ago and today is full of highrise condos, hotels and office buildings. The Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District runs from the beach to the heart of downtown and is peppered with bars and restaurants. There are, in fact, more 4,000 places to eat and drink throughout the city.

Of course, Fort Lauderdale is perhaps most famous for its beaches, 23 miles of smooth white sand tucked against warm blue waters. The beaches are usually crowded but are also full of amenities, from basketball courts and amphitheaters to showers and grilling areas. There is even a beach for dogs.
