Cocoa Beach, Florida:
Sitting along the mid-Atlantic coast of Florida (the "Space Coast"), Cocoa Beach was a non-descript kind of place until the early 1950s when NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center arrived 15 miles north of town and brought in all kinds of new people, including astronauts. The 1960s TV show, I Dream of Jeannie, about an astronaut and his genie, was set here.
These days, Cocoa Beach is a little faded but popular with tourists and retirees (the median age is 56). It is home to famous, 52,000 square foot Ron Jon's, the world's largest surf shop, and it is the site of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. Most people, though, come for the six miles of sun-kissed, (often crowded) white sand beaches and for the steady surfing waves.
Canaveral National Seashore, known for its dunes, salt marshes, beaches and lagoons, is just down the road.
