Cooper Landing, Alaska
Cooper Landing (population 495) is nestled amid jaw-dropping scenery at the outlet of pristine Kenai Lake as it flows into the incredibly blue Kenai River in southern Alaska, about 100 miles south of Anchorage. This is a remote place, named after a miner who discovered gold here in 1848, but the population swells every summer with hikers, rafting adventurers and salmon and trout fishermen (local bears also enjoy salmon fishing and are often spotted in and along the water).
Inside and outside of town are campgrounds, road houses, bed and breakfasts, lodges, restaurants, river charters and outdoor gear stores. Several downtown buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Alaska Route 1 from Cooper Landing to Anchorage is one of the most beautiful drives in all of Alaksa, with the river on one side and towering peaks in every direction. The area averages 80 inches of snow per year.
