Abbeyville, Alabama

The Chattahoochee River forms the southern border between Georgia and Alabama, and Walter F. George Reservoir, also known as Lake Eufaula, is part of the river. Abbeyville (population 2,500) sits along the Lake and is about 50 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico. Rosa Parks, the civil rights icon, grew up here.

Although the town has had a somewhat turbulent history (arson, a tornado, etc.), today it is a quiet, country place. The downtown is small but attactive with brick buildings, old fashioned storefronts and tree-lined streets. Huggin' Molly is the local ghost who wanders the streets late at night when the moon is full. Or so they say.

Neighborhoods are peppered with dogwood trees, and each year the Yatta Abba Festival celebrates spring and blooming dogwoods with food, art and entertainment.
