Retirees Enjoy High Quality of Life
in Safe, Pretty, Planned Southern City
Cost of Living: Above the
National Average
|
|
| Meandering paths, abundant
green belts, two lakes, strict sign
ordinances, underground utilities, shopping clustered
off the major roads, lots of trees, roadside and median
plantings and landscaping and no homes facing busy
streets all contribute to making Peachtree City a pretty
place indeed. It has been recognized as one of the
most successful planned cities in the country, and
growth is regulated; plans call for limiting the
population to 40,000 residents, which will increase real
estate values down the road. The good
citizens of Peachtree City are educated (40% have a
college degree) and generally conservative. |

Since its initial development, the city's amenities have
expanded to include four swimming pools, a soccer complex,
an ALTA-approved tennis center (24 courts), baseball,
softball, soccer, and football fields, a 2,000-seat outdoor
amphitheater, a senior center, a teen center,
numerous parks and playgrounds and the Kedron Fieldhouse and
Aquatic Center. The 500-acre Flat Creek Nature
Area is a peaceful spot where visitors may view herons,
beaver and other native wildlife. Peachtree
City is also a golfers' Paradise with 4 top-notch courses,
one in each village; the membership entry fee (one time
initiation) is $750, and greens fees are $7 o
$9. There is an active Parks and Recreation
department offering a wide program of activities for
families and retirees, and recreation facilities are
well-maintained as is the entire city.
|
|
Peachtree City also boasts a number of theater and
dance companies, including the Twilight Theatre, Offshoot
Productions and Dance Contempra and Evolving Point Ensemble, which
offer performances throughout the year. Nationally
known entertainers and bands come to play at the amphitheater, and
the Peachtree City Library hosts monthly book clubs, a thriving
poetry group and an international film club. Restaurants are
in good supply as is shopping; many of the stores are
specialty and high-end retailers, but discounter Wal-Mart is
here. For nightlife, museums, symphonies and serious
shopping, Atlanta is close at hand. When
it comes to health care, more
than 100 general practitioners and specialists have offices
in Peachtree City. There are 3 outpatient facilities, 3 regional
hospitals nearby, and the 110-bed Piedmont Fayette Hospital is
just 3 miles from Peachtree City; retirees will be glad to know
that is has been named one of the nation's Top 20 medium sized
community hospitals. Peachtree City also has access to Lifeflight
emergency airlift service and operates an emergency ambulance
service.
Operated through the Parks and
Recreation Department is the 4,500 square foot Gathering Place (770-631-2553),
a senior citizens' facility. It is also home to the Senior
Adult Council which was created by the City Council to be
the advocate of Peachtree City citizens age 55 and over.
Fayette Senior Services, located in nearby Fayetteville, is a
county-wide organization that offers transportation, in-home care,
meals on wheels, a wellness program, referrals and more to
seniors. They can be reached at 770-461-0813.
The city is very safe with a crime
rate nearly 75% below the national average, something everyone,
but especially retirees, can appreciate. There are dozens of
churches, and synagogues can be found in Atlanta.
Peachtree City has no public transportation; instead it has the 9,000
registered golf carts (which can cause traffic jams and are also
driven by kids so watch out).
The climate here is hot, humid and hazy in
the summer (the average daytime temperature is 87 degrees), and
mild in the winter (the average daytime temperature is 42
degrees). Humidity in the mornings can reach 90% but
usually levels off to 50% to 60% by afternoon. The city
receives 4 to 5 inches of rain each month and has a 74% greater
chance of being struck by a tornado than the rest of the country
(not that this has ever happened).
Peachtree City is an orderly, well-planned
and well-kept city, but not in an eerie Orwellian kind-of-way. It has a laid-back, leafy, suburban feeling,
tucked away from it all while not being too far from everything
that an exciting, major U.S. city (Atlanta) has to
offer. Accolades are many; drawbacks seem
few.
