Lynchburg has its share of festivals as well.  The James River Batteau Festival in June is a week-long event that celebrates the flat-bottom wooden craft that hauled tobacco downstream in John's Lynch's day.  Garden Day is part of Historic Garden Week in Virginia, the largest house and garden tour in the country.  The Monacan Powwow features Native American dancers and artists from across the county.  Kaleidoscope is Lynchburg's annual fall festival, a three-weekend event with dozens of events.

This is a safe city; the crime rate is below the national average.   Churches, particularly Baptist, are plentiful.  Broadband internet service is available through Jet Broadband or Central Virginia Services, Inc.   We were unable to find a senior center, per se, but Lynchburg does have an active meals on wheels program, and there are a number of home health care organizations, including the award-winning Generation Solutions (www.generationsolutions.net).

Non-profit Centra Health is the primary health care provider in Lynchburg and operates Lynchburg General Hospital, a Level II Trauma Center, and Virginia Baptist Hospital for a combined 559 beds and 5,000 health care professionals.  New hospital construction is underway and will add another 108 beds and a comprehensive cancer center.  Centra Health has been named as one of the Top 100 Cardiovascular Centers in the nation, and Virginia Baptist recently won recognition for excellent patient care.  Lynchburg General is also the regional hospital for emergency care, critical care, cardiology and neurology and has been mentioned by The Wall Street Journal as a top orthopedic hospital.

Lynchburg's mean annual temperature is 56 degrees.  The average January temperature is 35 degrees, and the average July temperature is 76 degrees.  Record high is 103 degrees; record low is minus 10 degrees.  The area receives about 40 inches of precipitation per year, roughly15 inches of which is snow.

Drawbacks to retirement in Lynchburg include the fact that it is a very hilly spot.  Not everyone may be up the effort it takes to walk the city.  It is also difficult to reach, tucked away in the middle of the state, and direct flights in and out are expensive.
