| As this community transitions from
being a covenant-controlled retirement community to a city
that welcomes singles and families from nearby Fayetteville
(20 miles) and Bentonville (8 miles) the ambiance
may change, however, and the community will have to
adapt. Right now Bella Vista has some of the
characteristics of a city and some of a planned retirement
development, making it somewhat unusual. It also
has its share of part-time and vacation-home owners, as well
as those from as far away as California and New York who
have bought land and plan to build at retirement time, but
all who come here are seeking the same thing - a peaceful
life in a safe, beautiful location at an affordable price. |

Bella Vista has fifteen churches, but it
does not have much in the way of retail or other
businesses, another reason that the community does not yet
feel like a city. There are a couple of
grocery stores, but movie theaters, bookstores, more
restaurants, cafes, garden stores and the rest are found
in nearby Bentonville (population 20,000 and home of
Wal-Mart) or Fayetteville
(population 60,000). DSL and cable Internet
access, though, are both readily available in town. |
|
Bella Vista has a few doctors' and dentists'
offices, but it does not have a hospital within city limits.
Bates Medical Center is, however, in Bentonville and is a 63-bed
acute-care facility with an intensive care/coronary unit, a CT
scanner, a coronary catheterization lab, a nuclear medicine
center, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.
Call 501-273-2481 for more information. Bella Vista does
have an ambulance service ($75 a year rather than a per-trip
cost).

Residents here enjoy four
seasons. Precipitation averages 4 inches a
month, and snow does happen, as does the occasional ice
storm. The average January high temperature is 44
degrees, and the average low is 22 degrees. In
summer, temperatures can reach 90 degrees but do not
usually dip below the mid-60s. Humidity
averages 70%. Large tornadoes are
relatively rare, but small ones do occur from time to
time. |
To some, retirement in Bella Vista may seem a
little too quiet and a little too rural. The lack of stores,
some conveniences and entertainment venues may be considered a
drawback, as might the fees required to access many of the
amenities. Many homesites are hilly, and roads can get a
little treacherous in winter. And not all current residents
are happy with the changes taking place, from city incorporation
to families and children taking up residence (although even with
younger people moving into town the residents' average age is still
61). Others feel, though, that all of this benefits
the community, bringing in new life while retaining much of the
serenity that made, and continues to make, Bella Vista
appealing. Return
